1 out of 5 stars Not for Windows 7   March 9, 2010
real consumer (East Coast)
Although Amazon doesn't described Win7 in its compatible OS, I checked the box from local store, Microsoft's website, and McAfee's website to make sure it is compatible. Well, not for my 32-bit Win7. Could not install from the web (for Win7) so I installed it from CD but could not update the database. So, I contacted to McAfee Tech support, there were two choices, chat and email. But I couldn't get any option to email them after filling out personal info. Only chat was available if I installed Gotoassist.exe (Citrix) file. Though I didn't want to, I installed it but there was no option to chat with anybody. After spending ~4 hours without any success, I decided to return it to Amazon. Boo :(

3 out of 5 stars Your results may vary. (I hope.)   March 5, 2010

Not to overstate my case ... but there are times when I hate, loathe, despise, abhor and repudiate Norton security products. At least the ones they offer to consumers. The versions they sell to corporations run quietly and efficiently behind the scenes, rarely drawing attention to themselves. However, the home versions are like rude, spoiled brats: "Hey! Look! I updated myself and I want to restart your system right this very instant! Who cares that you're doing something important? Look-at-me, look-at-me, LOOK-AT-ME!" Norton Internet Security 2009 was the worst offender to date; I cringed every time I even glimpsed its icon in my system tray.

Thus, I was so excited when I was given the chance to try out McAfee Internet Security 2010 for free. I couldn't remove Norton from my system fast enough, and after rebooting my PC, it was with a sense of triumph and hope that I slipped the McAfee disc into my DVD drive and started to install it. Unfortunately, my joy was short-lived.

The McAfee disc immediately froze up my system, necessitating a restart. After reinserting it, the program finally loaded, very slowly. (I'm running Windows XP on a Sony PC with a Pentium D processor, a 500 GB hard drive and tons of RAM.) After it finished, it froze up again before I could register online. I restarted my system again, and McAfee began to tell me that my computer was at risk because it couldn't download the updates it needed and because I couldn't turn on "Real-Time Scanning."

I worked with the problem myself, and finally went online for a chat session with McAfee support. I was told my wait time for a representative would be 9 minutes ... it ended up being almost 40. The rep was extremely polite and friendly, and I finally gave him remote access to my computer, mouse, and keyboard. He manually downloaded the McAfee updates to my system, but it took the better part of an hour. Then he tried to turn on "Real-Time Scanning", without success. He finally apologized profusely, telling me that McAfee was having issues with updates to its servers, that my problems were the result of McAfee's internal technical snafus. He warned me that it would take another 5 or 6 hours for everything to resolve itself, and to call back if I was still having issues later on.

The next day, I was able to turn on "Real-Time Scanning", and my status changed to "Secure" ... but I couldn't browse certain websites (including my own site as well as Amazon!) without triggering a series of three security warnings - and that happened every time I simply navigated from one page to another. By this time, I was feeling a certain nostalgia for Norton ... it may have been a royal pain, but it did work. Finally, I realized that McAfee had changed my PC's security settings in "Control Panel: Internet Options", and I restored them to the default settings, which resolved all my browsing problems. However, by this time I had lost half a day in productivity with no guarantee that my ordeal was over, so I went out and purchased Norton Internet Security 2010 and went back to what was annoying, yet familiar.

Will you experience the same problems with McAfee? I would bet not. I'm afraid I probably installed and activated the program on a bad day which (hopefully) was very atypical. For that reason I don't want to give them a toally negative rating. Accordingly, I'm going to deduct a star for the time I lost waiting for customer service and another star for the program's secretive and unapproved modification to my computer's security settings. Here's hoping that should you switch to McAfee, your experience will be better than mine.

5 out of 5 stars Great all around security product for your PC   March 3, 2010

In the past, I have used TrendMicro, Norton, VIPRE and Kaspersky anti-virus software for my PC. But this time, I wanted to try McAfee's Anti-virus and Anti-spyware software. One of the major plus that caught my eye that was offered with this software was:

* Unlimited Home Site License
* Next-generation Anti-Malware Technology
* Over 12 Real-Time Customizable Monitors
* 67MB of RAM memory used unlike other software which needs over a 100MB of RAM.

Installation was quite easy. Upon installation, an update was required but that didn't take too long (via a broadband connection).

With a quick scan, the software detected several spyware which were not caught by my other spyware software which was interesting. I went ahead and did a full scan and sure enough, six more were found on my system.

With this software, you can organize your schedule of when to scan your computer and it can auto-update as well.

The company also prides itself with free live US-based Tech Support by phone, e-mail and chat, also including a history cleaner and secure file eraser.

And there were no additional software added to my system or toolbars for my browser which was a plus.

Its taxing of available resources is low in comparison to similar product, which leaves more resources available for ongoing tasks.

Overall, this software has done everything I have expected from it so far. I like the fact that this software has an unlimited home site license and for those who want simplicity of install and scan or for those who want to be hands-on with the software can do so.

Easy to use, works effectively and overall a solid anti-virus and anti-spyware software.

Highly recommended!

Good for basic virus detection and mail protection, I was just hoping for more intensive searching/cleaning of rootkits/trojans. Certainly better than nothing and it's easy to set-up and update.

While I could go on about the positives of this package, I'll stop right there and tell you that there is a better option for antivirus software out there right now that is absolutely free. Microsoft Security Essentials is the program I use for all of my Windows based computers. As long as you have a valid copy of Windows, you can download this program from Microsoft for free, and it has garnered positive reviews from the majority of its users so far. In my opinion, it will shortly take over McAfee and Norton as the most widely used antivirus and internet security program on the market.
