Beware this Product! May 15, 2010 Richard T. Holland (Blue Ridge, GA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased NTI Backup Now 5 Advanced Edition DVD Case as a replacement for my aging Norton Ghost, which had the annoying habit of sometimes locking up my system during backup. I worked for IBM for 30 years and had one of the first original PCs in Atlanta. My field was Tech Support and PC Product Marketing. I have a Dell PC with XP Home and two optical drives, a couple of USB Drives, a CD and a DVD....pretty vanilia system. The installation of Backup Now ran fine and I rebooted the system as indicated. Afterwards, my CD and DVD drives had disappeared from the list of drives available. Windows Device Manager showed an error on both the drives and reinstalling the Windows Device Driver did not work. I decided that the best course of action here was to uninstall Backup Now and start over. When I ran Install/Remove Programs for Backup Now, it gave me an "Error Reading Setup Initialization File", so I could not uninstall it. I contacted NTI Tech Support and received a reply the next day. I must say that they were very prompt and responsive, just of little value in resolving my problem. After describing my problems, I was advised that it appeared to be an incomplete installation, which would be indicated by the absence of the NTIDrv.sys file in a given location. The program apparently replaces the existing optical driver with NTIDrv.sys. I confirmed that the driver WAS installed in the location given, indicating a good installation. They also sent along a reg file to run that would remove the NTIDRV.sys file from the registry. I ran that and was then able to reinstall the Windows Drivers and my optical drives were now visible in Windows Explorer. Media Player and RealPlayer could see and use them, but NONE of my three burner programs could see or write to the drives. To remove the program, they suggested that I download and run the Windows Cleanup Unility, then delete the Backup Now subdirectory and reinstall the Backup Now application. (At this point I had decided that if I ever get it uninstalled, it will be returned to Amazon, even I do only get half my money back) I downloaded the Windows Cleanup Utility, and it gave me a Microsoft VBScript runtime error and would not run. NTI Tech Support now insists that Windows Installer Service or Windows Script is corrupted. I find this hard to believe since every other program I have tried will uninstall and reinstall successfully. However, I downloaded the latest Windows Installer Service and Windows Script, but my system indicated that I was already at the latest level. I get automatic updates from Microsoft, I run McAfee Virus protection, Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and three other cleaners on a regular basis. There is no malware or viruses on my system and everything works perfectly; except that currently I can't run my burner programs or uninstall Backup Now. Ultimately, NTI Tech Support gave me two options. Reinstall Windows and all my applications from scratch and Backup Now should install properly. No way I'm going to do this when everything else on my system runs perfectly...that's why I wanted a system backup! The other option is to run Regedit and remove every reference to Backup Now I can find (assuming I don't make an error and trash the registry) then I can manually delete the program. That's not gonna happen either. So what to do? I ordered a progrom called GoodSync, which I highly recommend. It automatically keeps a shadow image of my data files backed up, making sure I don't lose the data for two websites and the hundreds of images and video I have out there. By the way, it installed perfectly and runs great! I highly recommend it. I will run without a system backup until it crashes then rebuild it from scratch or purchase a new system with Windows 7 and gradually move my applications to a new system, then rebuild this one. Backup Now will have to just stay installed until then. When I get time, I will try reinstalling my burner programs, hoping they will reinstall the correct driver I need for the optical drives. Install this product at your own risk! There is no going back and the fix is expensive both in time and monetarily.
